STUDENT EDITION*Volume 30, Number 10*August 25, 2010

LPS LOS BAÑOS FORMALLY REOPENED

Little People’s School, Los Baños was formally reopened on August 7, 2010, morning with the blessing of the school building and grounds, and the “poon” of Our Lady of Guadalupe, the patron saint of LPS Los Baños, by Reverend Father Jessie Somosierra, parish priest of Saint Augustine Church, Bay, Laguna, followed by a meeting of parents, teachers, and administrators. There was 100% attendance of parents and pupils, and LPS teachers. Dr. Wilbur Ventura, Sr., President, Mrs. Guillerma C. Ventura, Principal, and Mrs. Zenaida B. Quintos, Guidance Counselor and School Secretary, represented the administration.

The highlights of the meeting were as follows:

  1. Dr. Ventura recalled that LPS started right in the place of the meeting when Mrs. Ventura gathered seven small children of the neighborhood to start her kindergarten school on January 7, 1977. Then, it was transferred to San Isidro, Bay, in 1986 with pre-elementary and elementary courses. Later on, high school was included. But during the Ondoy, Pepeng and Santi floods last week of September 2009, all students from LPS Bay came to LPS Los Baños, and stayed for nearly four weeks. It was that time that Mrs. Ventura realized her beginning, and thought of reopening LPS Los Baños.
  1. Dr. Ventura explained that having been built in 1976, the school building is now old, that we keep on repairing and renovating it. It will undergo further improvement as we go on. He emphasized that at present only Mrs. Maria Gracia Sangkal Carandang is the only teacher, but everyday, someone from the main school in Bay comes around to see the needs of the school. Perhaps, later on, as our school grows, we can utilize the second classroom with another teacher, and of course with a separate janitor.
  1. Mrs. Ventura recalled the time when she was alone, and related it to what Mrs. Grace Carandang is doing now; it seems like a repeat performance except that during her time, Mrs. Ventura was alone and had to study by herself and decide things by herself, unlike now where teacher Grace has the advantage of having other teachers in preschool in Bay, and Mrs. Ventura, to help her.
  1. Mrs. Zenaida Quintos explained what Mrs. Helen Martinez earlier said that the target of nursery is socialization (good manners and right conduct, to be more independent), with lessons on readiness in writing and reading, verbal communication, writing of name, coloring, and lots of drawings. Kindergarten is a continuation of nursery with identification of the alphabet, with more intense lessons in writing, reading and math readiness. Preparatory is advanced kindergarten with lessons in reading, writing, and math readiness; target is for every child to read well and write simple words and sentences.
  1. Mrs. Grace Carandang explained her methods of teaching that are the same as those in LPS Bay, where there is a daily cell phone communication with Mrs. Helen Martinez, the main preschool teacher, and periodic reports to Mrs. Ventura, the Principal. Her main problem is discipline, but Mrs. Ventura noted that this is expected that after sometime, everything will turn all right. Two days later, Mrs. Ventura returned to evaluate the children and found all of them to be normal at their age, although some as very active then gave some pointers to teacher Grace on how to handle pre-elementary children.
  1. It was not a part of the program but since she was there, Miss Rosa Aguirre was asked to talk about her English speaking campaign. She made a lasting impression with her superb English diction and pronunciation, and convinced everybody to speak English even at home to train children thoroughly, for this skill has far-reaching effect in education, everyday life and future career.
  1. The administrators answered the questions and made clear the doubts of parents and teacher. LPS Los Baños children and parents will go to LPS Bay for the intramural games to enable them to play with their counterparts in the big school, that there will also be activities for the parents of both schools.

Newly Elected CSO Presidents: Kristian Carlo Llanes (High School) and Exequiel Xavier Viñas (Elementary)

In High School, Kristian Carlo Llanes of the IMBA (Irrevocable Mission of Best Actions) Party, the underdog won by just one vote over heavy favorite Rosmund Lemuel Tolentino of PNOYS, and John Morries Garcia of MYX. Kristian made down-to-earth but concrete promises in his speech during the Grand Rally made the big difference. The complete line up of the Central Student Organization (CSO) Officers for SY 2010-2011 is as follows:

            President - Kristian Carlo Llanes
Vice President - Sheena Jean De Jesus
            Secretary - Jessamay Matanguihan
            Treasurer – Manilyn de Guia
            Muse – April Elomina
            Escort – Kevin Panisales
            Adviser: Mrs. Alice F. Tanghal

In Elementary, Exequiel Xavier Viñas won the presidency by a wide margin over the other presidential candidates, but it was the diminutive boy in grade 2, Kaiou Leo Mingi that stole the entire show by getting the most number of votes for Escort. Kaiou is not only good in academics but in speech and singing that captivated 80 % of the entire votes in elementary. The list of CSO Officers in Elementary is as follows:

            President – Exequiel Xavier Viñas
Vice President – Chazzy Mariel Ramos
            Secretary – Nicole Lopez
            Treasurer – Abigail Escueta
            Muse – Stephanie Dolores Veterana
            Escort – Kaiou Liu Mingi
            Adviser: Mrs. Nelia Casapao Lanip

The Grand Rally where every CSO candidate spoke was held last July 29, and voting for both High School and Elementary was on July 30. Please read the speeches of the winning candidates for President in High School and Elementary and see if they will abide by their election promises. All winning candidates in the CSO were inducted into office by the school principal, Mrs. Guillerma C. Ventura last August 13.
John Morris Garcia

LEST WE FORGET

We have our LPS Student Manual that contains the rules and regulations of our school. Please take note of the following to avoid untoward happening or misunderstanding later on:

Section VI, Number 1. OFFENSES SUBJECT TO DISCIPLINARY ACTION
For physical fight or similar to it, a child who hurts another one, especially when the latter sustains a wound, i.e., blood came out, no matter how small, is automatically subject to suspension, with the number of days to be determined by the School Principal.

Section III, f.  GUIDELINES MOSTLY FOR PARENTS
Parents are not allowed to scold, impose corporal punishment, or even just touch a child that is not theirs. Complaints should always be directed to the Principal. Likewise, parents are not allowed to enter the classroom, and talk to the students without prior approval from the Principal.

(Adviser’s Note: Parents can of course come and visit their children in school but they should talk outside the classroom or in the Guidance Office.)

SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT ACTIVITIES

  • Cementing of the basketball court is already completed, but we have still to replace the basketball rings and paint the court, hoping to be ready by Thursday, August 26 for the Intramural Games.
  • Widening of corridor in the southwestern side of the High School Building is completed. Now, there is enough space to watch for programs or attend the Holy Mass of Father Jessie without getting wet. But we have still to provide drainage system in that area, and replace ornamental plants.
  • Installing floor tiles in the TLE room of Mrs. Zenaida Quintos, as first project of CSO High School with Kristian Carlo Llanes as president. It is an auspicious start, with target completion date before the Bay District Sports Meet at LPS in September.
  • Constructing concrete fence at the southwestern side of the school campus (near the High School Comfort Rooms). Target date of completion is September 30.
  • Extension of present TLE Shop to have a sort of a “covered court” with 350 seating capacity. Target date of completion is Christmas 2010.

CSO GRAND RALLY SPEECHES

Dr. Wilbur B. Ventura, Sr, our School President, Mrs. Guillerma C. Ventura, School Principal, Mrs. Zenaida Quintos, Quintos, Guidance Counselor, teachers, fellow students, and parents, a pleasant afternoon to all of you. We are gathered on behalf of other candidates for any position to voice out what we want to do for our school and for the betterment of ourselves, the students.

I, Kristian Carlo Llanes, running as president come up with all the projects I foresee. I will strive hard if you elect me as your new president.

I don’t believe that promises are meant to be broken. I say, “it depends.” It depends on the person’s ability to keep the promise. I’m not that kind of person who turns back to what he has said.

I have experienced like those other people who have promised something and won’t do it for reason, that’s why I feel for you. I feel for anyone of you and by that I won’t fail you. I would never disappoint you.

First and foremost: My first priority will be for our convenience, and that will be to provide more numbers of electric fans for each room, especially now that we are experiencing very humid climate.

Second: To pursue tiling of the TLE room in this school, so that we can be labeled not just as haven of excellence, but truly a haven in every sense.

Third: The promotion of recreational clubs that will enhance each of our talents and for the development of our being. Now, I’m asking you, are you with me?

Definitely, this is not the end, it’s only the beginning, the start of number of voices that will be heard. It’s about time; let us make it happen.

Once again, I’m Kristian Carlo Llanes aspiring to be the next CSO President. Thank you.
Kristian Carlo Llanes, HS CSO President

Thank you Voltaire, my campaign manager. I wish you a pleasant afternoon to all of you.

As a candidate for presidency in the elementary department, I made some plans for the betterment of our school. First is that I’ve noticed that our benches are now scarce, so I think that we should add more benches. It can be a place where parents can sit and watch their little kids. I have noticed that our spacious ground is very dusty, so we should plant more ornamental plants that will make the air fresher. And for my last proposal, I think we should focus on the ventilation in every classroom so that students would not sweat quickly and can focus more to their studies.

Being a president is not an easy task but with your cooperation we can make it easy.

Again, I, Exequiel Viñas, running for the position of president under the banner of G.I.A.N.T, am hoping for your cooperation. Please vote straight G.I.A.N.T. Thank you!
Exequiel Xavier A. Viñas, Elementary CSO President

MESSAGE FROM THE NEW VISION EDITOR-IN-CHIEF

For the past years I had been attending Journalism classes in summer. Then this March 24,2010, I was surprised when Dr. Wilbur Ventura, Sr. announced in our class that I was chosen as the next Editor-in-Chief of VISION. I was of course very happy to hear this for it completes my involvement in Newsletter writing.

After taking the UPCAT last August 7, I was tasked immediately to prepare this present issue of our Newsletter. This is a monthly assignment that I must do to give timely news and happenings at LPS. I know that my fellow students and our parents expect much from the editorial staff for articles of worthwhile reading. But I trust in my editorial board, especially to our Managing Editor, John Morris Garcia and Sheena de Jesus of the third year class to do their work promptly and properly; that we should not leave anything undone, that we have to stay like the colloquialism “wait till the fat lady sings.”

I know that this task is big but I like it for it sharpens my writing ability, it exposes me to the world of journalism, with the guidance of our adviser Miss Rosa A. Aguirre and support of our administrator, Dr. Wilbur Ventura, Sr. I know that this first issue of our Student Edition has many things to improve, but I trust for your understanding, for we shall try our best to improve our articles as we go on. What is important now is for us to complete this first issue then try our best to get more interesting articles in the coming issues. I hope that all of you would enjoy reading our work. Also, I invite other students both in elementary and high school to submit to me their contribution of articles for this Newsletter’s other objective is to improve the writing ability of students. We shall consider your work for publication. Thank you and stay with us for one school year.
Micah Marie F. Galapon

MESSAGE FROM THE VISION ADVISER

It has been more than two weeks since I started to wake up at 4:00 A.M. to prepare in going to work. I experienced difficulty at first because I wasn’t used to it. But as days passed by, my body was already adjusted. This routine taught me the sense of punctuality. I believe that punctuality is the soul of business. It is one of the factors that define a person’s attributes. As a teacher, I find punctuality an important factor of my being an educator. Coming early to school everyday feels like a motivation or challenge not only to my fellow teachers but also to my students. I would like them to see on me. Even though I am forty-five minutes away from Bay, I can still display one good attribute of a teacher that is being punctual in coming to school. I am glad that now we can have the flag ceremony and announce important notices to the students, and slowly but surely, the percentage of punctual children is going up. It seems that if the teacher is early, the students will come on time also.

Likewise, punctuality also counts in writing articles and publishing the newsletter. I as the adviser have the responsibility to give readers the newest happenings in LPS. As of now, the newsletter is highly dependent on the school administrator for the selection of worthy articles and editing, but he should like to pass the bulk of this work to the editorial staff and me. Maybe as Micah and Morris get used to the system, we can do that. Please be patient with us, we shall strive to do the best for you readers.
By Miss Rosa A. Aguirre, VISION Adviser

MESSAGE FROM MRS. GUILLERMA C. VENTURA, PRINCIPAL

I am pleased with the good performance of the High School CSO president by starting right away with his promised first project in the Grand Rally. I hope that this will give some motivation to all students to study and make good. We have also our English Speaking Drive, and I noticed that some have started to talk in English in their informal conversations, when they go to the canteen, or talk with me. That’s good and I hope that they will continue it.

Despite the wrath of typhoons Ondoy, Pepeng, and Santi, where we did reconstruction work, we are going to host the 2010 Bay High School District Sports Meet. We are doing some renovation and improvement work, we are very busy indeed, but hopefully, the district meet would be a success with us.

I instructed our teachers in all levels not to play with stones and sharp objects like pencil or ball pen, because these may cause accidents. In addition, we require teachers in preschool, grades 1 to 4 to stay with their children for snacks and lunch, to avoid quarreling. We have guidelines about this, and we shall implement them whenever necessary.

We are through meeting parents by sector, and the one with the highest attendance (100%) of parents is LPS Los Baños. We learned many things from the comments and suggestions of parents, and trust that these are useful guidelines in running our school. Thank you very much.
