LPS CELEBRATES 32ND FOUNDING ANNIVERSARY

LPS celebrated its Founding Anniversary last January7, 2009 (Wednesday), recalling the opening of LPS by its first teacher, Mrs. Emma C. Ventura, for the first time in Anos, Los Baños on January 7, 1977. The celebration was divided into three parts – Holy Mass, Impromptu Program, and Faculty Meeting.

Part I was a holy mass celebrated by Rev. Father Jessie Somosierra, Saint Augustine Parish priest, at 10:00 A.M., attended by all students, faculty, and some parents. Then, the whole afternoon was devoted to an Impromptu Program (Part II). Please see separate list the winners in the Song and Dance Contests. Part III was a Faculty Meeting where Dr. Wilbur B. Ventura, Sr. expressed the satisfaction of the family with the school performance, passing an average of 10 to the University of the Philippines every year, that we performed creditably in the 2007 National Career Assessment Test, landing the school to the top 10 in the region and to the top 100 nationwide.

In her Founding Anniversary message, Mrs. Emma Ventura, School Founder and Principal, recalled her years in Los Baños; that she had also a concrete stage there, but being the only teacher, she served as the emcee, coached the pupils how to sing or dance, and as operator of the sound system as well. But, even though it was a little school, all her programs were well attended, that her 500 sq.m. lot was full to the rim, plus other people viewing from the outside, right in the railroad track - audience was not lower than 500 in a program. She mentioned the birth of her favorite topic in every Graduation Program there, the Mahiwagang Bibi that was continued up to the nineties in Bay campus. That the Mahiwagang Bibi story will be continued in the Grand Alumni Homecoming of our graduates on January 7, 2013.

The President expressed the desire of the family to have this present strong faculty staff continue for next year, and for many more years, to maintain quality education that is now a standard at LPS. CONGRATULATIONS TO THE LPS FACULTY!

WEDDING BELLS FOR TEACHER CYRENE CALIWAGAN

After 11 years of being girlfriend and boyfriend, Miss Cyrene B. Caliwagan and Mr. Ramil Bondoc Salem decided to tie the knot on January 24,2009, Saturday, at 7:30 A.M., in San Augustine Parish Church, Bay, Laguna. The two met through a common friend, then, they decided to become friends since friendship is a good foundation of a lasting relationship. After sometime, the man felt something special for the innocent but lovely lady. The rest is history.

Now, only few days are left to be counted for them to be officially called as wonderful couple. “Marriage is a lifetime commitment which will bring adjustments and ups and downs.” We are looking forward for the best and fruitful life for the two after their wedding day. May God bless for the both of you and may there be many little Cyrene and Ramil to come.

RESEARCH PROJECT: NEW DEVELOPMENT

The research project as one of the inevitable requirements of fourth year students started August 2008 and is expected to finish on February of this year. According to Miss Liz Joy Garcia, Chemistry teacher and adviser of Chemistry-related research projects, fourth year students are becoming to be responsible now in their studies and are starting to gather data correctly. Miss Janice Joy Paguio, Physics teacher and adviser of Physics-related projects, said that they were almost finished in their research and are expected to proceed on their statistical treatments on the last week of January. Mrs. Alice Tanghal, Biology teacher and adviser of most of the research projects expressed satisfaction on the progress of the work. Mr. Albert Rivera, Math teacher and adviser for statistical analysis, added that on the first week of March, there will be a Science Poster Exhibit that will showcase the top 10 Experimental Research for 2009.

ADMINISTRATOR’S TEST ON JANUARY 16, 19 AND 20

The Administrator’s Test for SY 2008-2009 is given on January 16 (Friday), 19 (Monday), and 20 (Tuesday). The test aims to determine the student’s level in every subject. This test determines also the effectiveness of teaching. Dr. Wilbur Ventura, Sr., himself prepared most of the test questions, with the help of the School Principal and selected teachers. Results of this test confirms honor roll, those who will be promoted to next level, or retained in same level next school year. It serves also as a preparation for the taking of National Scholastic Assessment Test in High School or the National Elementary Achievement Test in Elementary (if ever it will be given).

EDITORIAL

During the past issues of the newsletter, writers ordinarily wrote articles in the editorial section. I felt proud as their adviser because I can see that members of my staff are eventually honing their writing skills. For one, writing maybe a menial task but for my persistent writers, it seemed an interesting movie that they like to continue watching. As the VISION adviser, I cannot escape the fact that I, too, have to share a portion of my life to the readers. And here it goes.

The year 2008 brought many changes in my life. It made me experience struggles from small to big ones that eventually molded the better side of me. When 2009 started, these changes still lingered on my system. I started to appreciate small things like the hardships of my parents for me and for my two sisters, which before were not a big deal for me. I, myself, learned that life is not as easy as eating peanuts. Since I am the eldest I have the obligation to help my parents in providing the needs for the whole family. That did not sink until year 2008 came. Personally, I changed some perspectives in life through the shortcomings that I experienced inside our house. I don’t want to go on to the details, but I am proud that now I am starting to live a more meaningful life.

Another change in me is about my valuing the profession that I learned to love. Yes, teaching is really not an easy job for it requires dedication, patience, love, and kindness. There were many high-salaried jobs outside, the blue gates of LPS, but I chose to stay and mold young minds here. If in the previous years, I taught with hesitation in my heart, now, seeing my students starving and giving their 100% effort in studying, I feel confident that I am becoming a better teacher. Lastly, one important change in me was on how I should treat people around me, like my bosses, fellow teachers, and others. Facing and spending all 365 days with different people obviously takes a lot. “Pakikisama” is the term. As a person who has a moody type of personality, it took me sometime to change it and be sociable. Being submissive to my bosses taught me to become a down-to-earth person. I still have many things to learn and to develop in this ever-changing life.

Thus, these things that changed me, the whole me, made me realized that there is nothing constant in this world. It can’t be the old person whom I was before. I need to grow. I have to spread my wings and fly into the sky with confidence and optimism in my heart and soul. These changes will be my guiding lines for 2009.

MESSAGE FROM MRS. EMMA C. VENTURA, SCHOOL PRINCIPAL

I should like to warn the fourth year class against complacency. As graduating, you should show your best to get the approval of every teacher and administrator. Take care of your attendance, attend to your home works, and above all, show your respect to your teachers. Remember that teachers have full authority on the grades that even me, as your principal cannot change.

Please fill up the Enrolment Form for SY 2009-2010, as confirmation for next school year. May we have those forms before the end of January?
I am glad about the outcome of research projects, and I can see that we shall have the Science Poster Exhibit by the first week of March. Here, we shall select the Most Outstanding Research, Best Research Student, and Best Science Poster. Fourth year students will take the National Scholastic Achievement Test (NSAT) in March that I instructed our teachers to review them. In fact, the Administrator’s tests are mostly Standardized Tests to serve as review for the coming NSAT.

LIFE AT LPS: Dissecting Frog

Last January 9, Friday, we had dissecting of frog as project in Biology under Mrs. Alice Tanghal. Good Mrs Tanghal postponed it to after lunch. When the time came, we were curious and some of us were even screaming. We first paralyzed the frog so that it would not move while we dissect it, but it should be alive during the operation. We next cut the skin then opened its body. There we saw the frog’s internal organs. We were amazed by how the frog was trying to escape even with its body opened. We removed its organs and put them in vials for our studies. And even without its internal organs, it was still moving; its heart was still pumping! We observed how the heart functioned this way. In this subject, I overcame my fear of seeing blood and observing a disgusting animal. It is living Science, sacrificing a life for the sake of Science.

HAPPY 32ND FOUNDING ANNIVERSARY

Little People’s School celebrates its 32nd anniversary as an educational institution today, January 7, 2009, marking the day (January 7, 1977) when Mrs. Guillerma C. Ventura opened the door of her then new house in Anos, Los Baños, to accept her first batch of students, composed of seven pre-elementary pupils. It may have been a boring situation for Mrs. Ventura having nothing to do after her house chores because her husband, Dr. Wilbur Ventura, Sr. was then an Assistant Scientist at IRRI and their only child, now Dr. Wilbur Ventura, Jr. was in Grade Three at the Maquiling School, Inc. The children were very happy with their parents, because the teacher served them free snacks and did many things that day like drawing, playing, dancing, singing, and other things that kindergarten children normally do in school.

That late afternoon of January 7, upon arriving home both father and son questioned the mother why those chairs were scratched and partly damaged, why the crayons of the son were used up, why the place was literally dirty, and so on! Mrs. Ventura explained to them that she invited children of the neighborhood to have a sort of informal kindergarten class to make a fruitful day for her. Both kept quiet but appeared bothered about this development in their life, but Mrs. Ventura was determined to pursue her newfound happiness. Fate may have been in favor of the school because several days later, the husband got sick, took a sick leave from work and stayed home. While resting in their bedroom, he could hear the commotion, becoming later on as happy noises in their living room, now converted into a classroom, with the wife very happy likewise in teaching them new things based from the books of her only child. The husband then realized the joy and contentment of his wife, who was earlier very sickly and lonely, that the husband stood up, got carpentry tools, and started building another room for the children. Slowly, the son got used to have other children at home, and eventually played with them after arriving from school.

The school stayed in Los Baños from 1977 to 1986, with Mrs. Ventura as the only teacher for most of the time, only getting other teachers when enrolment went up beyond 100. Then, she transferred it to its present site here in San Isidro, Bay, because of the very limited space in her first house. It grew up as a kindergarten, elementary, and high school through the years with the able support of her husband and their only child. In this 32nd Anniversary, their prayer as a family is for this school to continue growing; with the blessings of the Lord; that it will continue to give quality education to the Filipino children.

LPS CELEBRATES 32ND ANNIVERSARY WITH A HOLY MASS

The 32nd Founding Anniversary of Little People’s School, Incorporated will be highlighted by a Holy Mass in school on Wednesday, January 7, at 10:00 A.M. with Reverend Father Jessie Somosierra, Saint Augustine Parish Priest, officiating. Mrs. Alice Tanghal, Science Teacher, coordinates 32nd Founding Anniversary celebrations. All members of the LPS Board of Trustees, faculty and students and some parents will be present to say together their thanks to the Lord for giving them this nice school.

AFTER TWO CHRISTMASES, SCIENCE LAB HAS FLOOR TILES

Mrs. Alice Tanghal did not lost hope when the number of tiles they were able to get from Christmas Caroling 2007 was not enough. This Christmas 2008, she, Mr. Albert Rivera, and students led by Shaira Janina Manalo, CSO President, and Dean Carlson Alejandrino, Values Club President did Christmas caroling again in the houses of LPS parents, and this time around, they were able to buy enough to complete floor tiling of the Science laboratory. Mrs. Ventura promised to shoulder the cost of labor and other expenses for the installation work. Many thanks to LPS parents for their enthusiastic support. HAPPY NEW YEAR!

THANK YOU MERCURY DRUG, THANK YOU MR. EDWIN ROSARIO

Mercury Drug, through Mr. Edwin Rosario, gave us as Christmas gift a boxful of the 2009 Calendar featuring the Philippine Wonders. Now, these calendars are displayed in every office and classroom at LPS. Mercury Drug is where Mrs. Ventura is buying the maintenance medicine of Dr. Ventura, Sr. who has been in sickbay for two years now. Many thank to Mercury Drug. Thank you Mr. and Mrs. Rosario!

32ND FOUNDING ANNIVERSARY WISHES

Before, I wanted to find a better school for the sake of my future until I found Little People’ School. And it is still my school for I have learned many good things here. I am now in third year and I know the many challenges ahead of me, especially in taking the NCAE, NSAT, and UPCAT. Inasmuch as our school is passing many students to U.P. every year, I have high hopes that I will make it also. This early, the administrators and teachers are now preparing us for the UPCAT with those updated standardized tests and review materials. I will take up the summer review class here to make my chance to enter U.P. higher. I know that LPS is the right school for me. In this 32nd Founding Anniversary, I wish that the celebration today would be peaceful, happy, and fruitful, especially in the Holy Mass. I wish for good weather today and that all of us students would get the Lord’s blessings from this joyful celebration.
By Christelle T. Jaraplasan
As a student who has been studying here since nursery, there are lots of Anniversary wishes in my heart for my second home, the LPS. First, I am wishing that it would be more prosperous in the coming years. Second is to have still higher proficiency in teaching, and last, I wish that this school will be a great help for our success in the future. I really want our school to maintain its position in the top ten of Region IV-A Calabarzon and in the top 100 throughout the country. I know that our school can do this because the school loves its students very much.
By Jelriz C. Lanip
LPS is celebrating today its 32nd Founding Anniversary and may I congratulate Mrs. Guillerma C. Ventura for her 32 years of nurturing our school, and may I thank her for giving us this beautiful school. In this occasion, I wish that LPS will stay longer in business, and I pray that others would discover the many great things about our school and what it can give. I appreciate very much the lessons in public speaking, being trained to be emcee, discovering new things in our research projects, and of course, the best is in Journalism class where I continuously sharpen my writing ability.
By Richelle Andrea M. Alejandre
It is our 32nd Founding Anniversary. I am happy that we have gone this far; I hope and pray that may the good Lord bless and keep on pouring His divine graces to LPS so that we shall have even more students, keeping our present batch of qualified and very good teachers not only to us in management, but also to the children and their parents. Thank you dear parents for your trust in us; rest assured that we keep on improving our school, physically and academically. HAPPY ANNIVERSARY!
By Mrs. Guillerma C. Ventura, School Principal
