FOURTH YEAR TO TAKE NCAE ON AUGUST 27

Our fourth year students will take up the National Career Assessment Examination (NCAE) on August 27 (Wednesday) here at LPS. Our teachers reviewed them in Mathematics and Abstract Reasoning (by Mr. Albert Rivera), Languages and Reading Comprehension (by Miss Rosa Aguirre), and the Sciences (Biology and Earth Science by Mrs. Alice Tanghal, Chemistry by Miss Liz Joy Garcia, and Physics by Miss Janice Joy Paguio). We hope and pray that they will make good in this examination, to at least equal the performance of Class 2008 that landed LPS in the top 10 in Calabarzon and within the top 100 schools nationwide!

EDITORIAL: THE REAL MEANING OF VICTORY

Losing in any competition or event is hard to bear. Others take a long time to accept the fact that they lost the chance to display their abilities. Maybe that’s not true. Based on Mr. Webster, the meaning of victory is success in war or any struggle. It is the very reason why people are aiming for victory; the very reason why people are afraid of losing. But what does VICTORY really mean for a student like me?

Last August 6, 2008, I ran for Vice Presidency of our school’s organization, Central Student Organization in High School (HS CSO). I had opponents from other levels. When the time came that I had to deliver my speech and lay down my plans for the school, I felt the sudden rush of hesitation, thinking if I will make it or not. After the deliberation of speeches and plans, all the students including me went back to the classrooms for the big event – the voting of candidates. I knew that it’s going to be tough fight among my other rivals. The other candidates were also my friends and acquaintances so I disregarded the thought of the competition. Although most of my fellow students had high expectations from me, I didn’t take it seriously. When the casting of votes came, I just prayed and readied myself to whatever result it would be. I was speechless the moment I learned that my friend Beatrice de Guzman won as the Vice President of the CSO instead. At first, there was an awkward feeling around me, but I regained confidence and said it was all right. Victory in this chapter of my life was not meant for me. But, it was fine with me because what matters are that I learn to accept the truths in life through this competition.

In my third year in high school, I know there will be more competitions and challenges that will come my way. Losing the CSO election will not hinder my soon to be triumphs in life. That’s why it is very important to know not only the real meaning of victory but also the true meaning of lose and acceptance. Life will be tougher than before, so why waste time in dwelling to those chapters in life? The thing is to continue, to move on and to strive aiming for the real victory.

FEATURE: Life at LPS (Intramural Games, the Lighter Side)

The Intramural Games were for the Intermediate Grades and High School students. However, the little kids of the preschool and primary grades like to play also. To meet their enthusiasm, they were given playing time on August 14 and 15 in track-and-field, basketball with the big ring that was installed quite low enough for them to shoot the ball easily, tug-of-war, “Maria went to town,” sack race, and lots of singing and dancing. Even the nursery pupils like Akeisha joined in practically all the games, to the delight of the lolas, lolos, yayas, mommies, and daddies, who were there to wipe the perspiration of their babies, and who appeared to be the most excited. A nice show indeed for Mrs. Helen Martinez, Miss Cyrene Caliwagan, Mrs. Marynette Salabsabin and Miss Liz Joy Garcia!

Last August 14 and 15 were our Intramural Games. On the second day, the first game was Track and Field. I joined that game although I am not a runner, so I would be able to have a grade in PEHM. I ran in the 400-meter dash. I was not able to complain to my teacher that my legs were aching.

On the teacher’s signal we started running. At first I was the slowest but when I realized that my opponents were going too far already, I ran as fast as I could, that I overtook the athlete of the second year. I was happy! But in the second lap, I slipped to the ground that caused my wounded knees. I stood up and resumed running but I knew then that I could not overtake the other runners anymore. Thus, to save my day, I run slowly with my patented poise and style. The big crowd laughed, somewhat amused with my antics. I may conclude that to be a “real” athlete, you should play with discipline and humility. Be a real sport! That is the real Gold! Jelriz Joi Lanip

Last August 14 and 15, we had our Intramural Games at LPS. We had lots of events like chess, volleyball, basketball, table tennis, badminton and track and field. I joined the volleyball games with my second year classmates but our opponents beat us. After the game I, with my friends, went to the other games to cheer our other classmates. On the last day, winners were announced. I was not included in the list of winners. But I was happy that some of my classmates won in their games. Indeed, even if my section was not the over-all champion, still the Intramurals helped us to have unity in our class, became closer to each other and discovered our talents in Sports.

Notes from the teachers
  • Our regular classes in Intermediate Grades and High School are from 7:30 A.M. to 4:30 P.M. The last period in the afternoon is for GMRC (Grade 4 to 6) or Homeroom (HS) or PEHM. Sometimes the activities are done outdoors. We request parents, drivers, or the “yayas” not to get their children yet, or else the children would not have any grade in those subjects. Please wait for the 4:30 P.M. bell.
  • The basketball court, volleyball, and other PEHM facilities are for the students only. Parents, drivers, “yayas” should not play with the children for these activities are part of their PEHM subject.
  • We are preparing our school for accreditation by DepEd. We request parents and everybody to help us keep the school clean and orderly all the time because DepEd supervisors would be coming for inspection of the school anytime.

Message from Mrs. Emma C. Ventura, School Principal

I am pleased that Mrs. Nelia Lanip is now back as Math Teacher in High School and Intermediate Grades. I requested Mrs. Lanip to take Grade Two for sometime to look into the problems besetting that level, and now that everything seems to be all right now, it is already safe to pass it to Mrs. Marynette Salabsabin, with condition that Mrs. Lanip would visit the Grade Two class frequently and serve as the immediate supervisor (or coach) of the Grade Two teacher.

I am pleased with the performance of our students, and teachers as well, during the Intramural Games. My instruction is to include all children in the games. In the practice, teachers go down to the basics of things like how to hit the volleyball, how to dribble the basketball properly, or what are the proper moves in chess. We are more interested in teaching every child the rudiments of the game, for this is indeed the start of molding champions.

After so many years, here comes our application for accreditation as a school, thus, all teachers are busy in the laboratories, guidance room, library, classrooms, grounds, and even the canteen for the coming inspection by supervisors from DepEd. The CSO and different class organizations will be given their parts in this massive preparation.

The results of last year’s National Career Assessment Examination (NCAE) show that we are one of the best, with Merris Galapon getting 99+, and 10 others getting 90 or better. This is very good. Please join me in prayers for the success of our present batch of fourth year in the coming NCAE.
